A native of Jutland, Foss studied under Vilhelm Kyhn at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. From 1865 onwards he regularly took part in the exhibitions of the Academy in Charlottenborg, with works that often featured Jutland landscapes. He went on to receive a number of prizes and medals (1867, 1879-1880, 1888-1889). Certain paintings were purchased for the Danish royal collection, and can be viewed today at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. In 1889, he became an honorary member of the Academy in Cophenhagen.
The chosen piece depicts a hilly landscape of dunes along the seashore in West Jutland, Denmark. This painting is very representative of Foss’s body of work, both in terms of the subject and the colour palette.
