A student at the Royal Academy from 1845-1847, Kieldrup had a passion for landscape painting. From 1849 to 1869, he regularly took part in the exhibitions at Charlottenborg. He funded his own study trips to Norway and Munich (1858-1859), which reinforced his bond with the Romantic landscape tradition. With a scholarship from the Academy in 1863, he was able to live in Switzerland and in Düsseldorf. During his many trips, he worked tirelessly on his plein air sketches, and brought back images of Norway and the mountainous regions of central Europe. His Danish landscapes, hardly devoid of picturesque elements, seem more strongly linked to the local Romantic landscape painting tradition. Sawmills are one of his favourite topics.
