Octave Alfred Saunier was a pupil of Eugène Ciceri (1813-1890), a Parisian landscape painter, watercolorist and lithographer. Ciceri was strongly influenced by the Barbizon School and obviously passed on his passion for Plein-Air painting to Saunier. Saunier worked mainly in Fontainebleau and its surroundings, and also left numerous watercolours.
An inscription on the painting locates this garden with beehives in Ver-sur-Mer, a village in Normandy not far from Caen.
